History of World Youth Day

“A global movement of faith, hope, and youth”

Across continents and generations, World Youth Day is a pilgrimage of hearts. It’s where strangers become family, where faith dances in the streets, and where the voice of Christ calls the young — not just to witness history, but to shape it.

🔹 What is World Youth Day?

World Youth Day (WYD) is the largest international Catholic event for young people, initiated by the Pope and celebrated every few years. It brings together millions of youth from around the world for prayer, worship, cultural exchange, and a personal encounter with Christ.

It is not just a day, but a week-long pilgrimage of Masses, catechesis, music, and community — culminating in a Papal Mass with the Holy Father.

🔹 Who Founded It?

WYD was founded by Pope St. John Paul II in 1985, inspired by his deep love and belief in the energy, faith, and mission of the world’s youth. His words:

“Young people are not only the future of the Church — they are its present.”
